About Us

A long-standing fund with a clear purpose.

The South African Nurses Trust Fund is registered under the Non-Profit Organisations Act, No. 71 of 1997, registration number 000-769 NPO, and the Trust Property Control Act, No. 87 of 1988, both as amended.

Who we are

The Trust came into existence on 29 March 1951 by virtue of an agreement between the South African Nursing Association and other interested parties, with its affairs governed by a Trust Deed that has been amended from time to time.

Our work centres on care, relief and dignity for members of the nursing profession who need meaningful support at a vulnerable stage of life.

Who we support

We support nurses in South Africa who have become incapacitated either through old age, ill-health or war strain, and who are compelled to withdraw from active work on a totally inadequate pension or with no pension at all.

We uplift beneficiaries in communities and old age homes by assisting them financially and with support where necessary.

History

Built from gratitude, fairness and action.

The Trust's roots reach back to women who saw nurses giving everything in hard conditions and decided that their care should be returned with care of its own.

World War I

Mrs V Caro sees the need

Founder Mrs V Caro worked as a voluntary nurse abroad in military hospitals in England and saw that nurses were often taken for granted while working long hours under difficult circumstances.

World War II

The first support effort begins

Living in Johannesburg, Mrs Caro resolved to address that imbalance and formed The Nurses Gifts and Comforts Group to support nurses in military service during and after the war.

1944

The mission expands

The South African Nursing Association widened the scope of the fund to include all nurses in need and changed the name to the South African Nurses' Trust Fund.

1951

The Trust is established

On 29 March 1951 the South African Nurses Trust Fund formally came into existence and has continued its work of support and upliftment ever since.
